Kay and Danny Howell pioneered the first residential solar hot water project in the area – in the style of an old-fashioned barn-raising. Solar installers Mountain View Solar not only erected the panels but provided on-the-job training for local residents to gain experience in solar construction as well as learn about financing options and future job opportunities in renewable energy. Over a dozen neighbors supported the Howells on the installation day – and enjoyed a delicious lunch. The Howells continue to promote solar construction in the valley. They hosted a solar open house in October 2010 and plan to eventually run their entire home off of solar power. Coal River Mountain Watch, thanks to a grant from the Annenberg Foundation, helped fund the installation.
