Through Build It Up WV, 8 West Virginians, ages 15-25, spent 6 weeks working side-by-side with grassroots groups that were launching community projects. As the participants supported, they also learned about the strengths and challenges in each community through both structured and unstructured discussions and visits with local residents. The program’s vision is to inspired and education young West Virginians about the possibilities for community development in their own state, while strengthening growing community initiatives. On Coal River, Build It Up worked in the greenhouse, helped reconstruct the community center, weatherized homes, and painted a community mural to help revitalize the downtown area. Planning for a second Build It Up, WV has already begun, and the majority of 2010’s participants have stepped up into coordinator roles.
